Cyfellion Swtan (Friends of Swtan) was formed in 1998 to breathe new life into the ruins of Swtan, the last thatched crofting longhouse on the island of Anglesey. We secured funding from Menter Mon and rebuilt the buildings. The cottage was furnished with the help of local people and now depicts life in the late 19th century.

The objectives of the restoration were:

- to provide opportunities for local unemployed people to learn new skills which could eventually lead to self-employment,

- to create a place of historic interest for local people, tourists, and for schools to visit for educational purposes,

- to offer a resource for craftsmen and builders to learn about traditional building techniques.

A recent grant from the Welsh Development Agency has allowed us to update our visitor experience. Using the funds they provided we have created interpretation boards to tell visitors about the renovation of the buildings, the history of the family which lived in them (and can be traced back to the 18th century), and other local points of historic interest.

We also have a collection of agricultural and fishing implements as well as a special new display depicting 'a woman's daily routine'. Here visitors have a chance to learn to learn how to make rag rugs, and see how hard a woman's life was as she did laundry by hand, and cooked and cared for her family. In another room you can see a video loop showing Dudley (the well known Welsh chef) cooking in Swtan on the open range.
