Welcome!

The Swtan site has had a bit of a spring-clean. We will be adding pages in Welsh shortly, and in the future we will also have videos, worksheets for kids, and other things!

Swtan is the last thatched cottage in Anglesey. If you want to combine a day on the ruggedly beautiful coast of North Anglesey with a unique insight into how people here used to live 100 years ago, come to Church Bay. Walk along the cliff path, paddle in the bay, have lunch at the Lobsterpot restaurant, and visit Swtan to see how the other half used to live!

There has been a dwelling on this site since at least 1678. By the 1990s the cottage had fallen into ruin, but in 1998 Cyfellion Swtan (Friends of Swtan) was formed to renovate it and establish it as a museum. The cottage was furnished with the help of local people, and now depicts life on the Anglesey coast in the late 19th century.

We have a collection of agricultural and fishing implements, and a display showing a woman's daily routine. Visitors have a chance to learn how to make rag rugs, and see how hard a woman's life was as she did laundry by hand, and cooked and cared for her family. In another room you can see a video loop showing Dudley (the well-known Welsh chef) cooking on the open range fire - quite a difference from today's hobs!

Cyfeillion Swtan would like to thank Menter Môn, who funded the renovation, and the Welsh Development Agency, who funded our interpretation boards.
